Abstract
- This paper delves into the historical foundations and significance of the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s role in transcending national divisions within the Orthodox Church. It explores the importance of the city’s historical significance and its local level of synodality within the Church, alongside the challenges posed by the federal interpretation of Orthodoxy, the emergence of national churches, and their repercussions on the life of the Church. While acknowledging the legitimacy of national identities, this paper emphasizes how their misuse can stifle the Church’s vitality and mission. A confederation that emphasizes allegiance to one faith without a tangible affirmation of administrative unity emerges as a problematic concept that disrupts the Church. This work approaches the topic both historically and systematically, highlighting the significance of synodality, particularly within the context of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which transcends these divisions, affirming itself as not solely an ancient or national institution, but as a global center of Orthodoxy.
