Abstract

Carlo Bonomi's book, "A Brief Apocalyptic History of Psychoanalysis: Erasing Trauma," explores the relational dynamics between Sigmund Freud, Wilhelm Fliess, Sandor Ferenczi, and Carl Jung. Bonomi argues that Freud's rejection of the idea that environmental trauma impacts psychic development was a defensive reaction to his own trauma history. By analyzing Freud's dreams and historical context, Bonomi suggests that Freud's repression of trauma, particularly related to circumcision, influenced his theories on castration anxiety and the role of unconscious fantasy. Bonomi also highlights the contributions of Ferenczi in providing a feminine perspective and emphasizing the importance of early environmental influences on the developing psyche.
