Abstract

According to a January 2024 survey by the Pew Research Center, 63% of Americans believe their local news outlets are doing well financially, although this is a decline from a previous survey in 2018. However, many publishers and news directors disagree, as the news industry is facing increasing financial difficulties. The survey also found that only 15% of Americans had paid for local news in the past year. While local news outlets were praised for their accuracy and coverage of important stories, there is a decline in the number of people following local and national news closely. Additionally, younger adults are more likely to support local journalists advocating for change in the community. The survey also revealed that almost half of U.S. adults prefer to obtain their news from digital channels, with social media and news websites/apps being the most popular sources. Local TV remains the primary source for local news, but its popularity has declined. Print news and radio also saw decreases in preference. The survey suggests that local news outlets that transition to online platforms will be better positioned to retain and gain audiences and revenues. [Extracted from the article]
