Abstract

This article focuses on Eugene Holman; board chairman of Standard Oil Co. Holman was born on May 2, 1895, in San Angelo, Texas, at the time when Texas was discovering its first oil. For one destined to seek new horizons for the petroleum industry, Holman could not have arrived better equipped. For nearly 150 years his forebears had been on the move--from the British Isles to the U.S., and on across it as the Indians receded. After the Civil War Holman's father, James R. Holman, was a member of a band of restless colonists who jumped off from California for the still greener horizon of the Argentine pampas.
