Abstract

A randomized clinical trial conducted in the United States found that various surgical approaches to treat vaginal vault prolapse are similarly safe and effective, with high rates of patient satisfaction. The trial included 360 women with vaginal vault prolapse after hysterectomy, who were randomly assigned to undergo different surgical procedures. At 36 months, sacrocolpopexy was found to be superior to native tissue repair for treatment success, while transvaginal mesh repair was noninferior to sacrocolpopexy. All surgical approaches were associated with high treatment satisfaction, improved quality of life, and sexual function. The study suggests that clinicians can discuss the different surgical options with patients and engage in shared decision-making. [Extracted from the article]
