Abstract

In the Chapala area a series of laboratory and field experiments were conducted to determine the relation between the feeding of the stink bug and the severity of sorghum head blight, caused by the fungus Fusarium moniliforme. In that region, the stink bug Oebalus mexicanus is the most prevalent insect on the sorghum panicle. F. moniliforme was isolated from inside of the insect. Tests of pathogen transmission resulted positive. The degree of damage by head blight was directly related with the incidence of stink bug. Regression analysis for the 1996 and 1997 data indicated that 70%-80% of the damage by head blight can be explained by the incidence of stink bug. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
