Abstract

This article presents several newsitems related to the computer industry. The Institute for Certification of Computer Professionals (ICCP) is planning an examination in late October 1977 that will lead to a new certification--the Certificate in Computer Programming. This certification complements the Certificate in Data Processing (DP) which the ICCP has sponsored for several years and which is primarily directed toward DP managers. John W. Hamblen, chairman of the computer science department of the University of Missouri-Rolla, will conduct a survey of computer activities in the U.S. higher educational institutions under a grant from the National Science Foundation. The study will include quantitative analyses of expenditures, staffing, hardware, utilization of computer systems, and related courses and programs, using 1976-1977 as the base year. Computer science is included among the research areas to receive special attention from the National Science Foundation (NSF) in fiscal 1978. The acting director of NSF told the U.S. Congress during budget hearings that there is a great need in computer science for more computational speed.
