Abstract
- Adolescence Germplasm banks are a way of preserving the genetic diversity of both animal and plant species. In the latter, seeds, tissues and DNA sequences are stored for use in production, conservation of rare or endangered species, and agricultural research. For Arguello et al. (2021) "are an option to guarantee the availability of seeds and, consequently, food production" (p. 119). Likewise, they can also be a way of promoting those native crops that are little attended to in the field of research. Aware of the importance of this issue, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO, 2014) publishes the standards for germplasm banks of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, which provide international guidelines for ex situ conservation in seed banks, field germplasm banks and in vitro conservation and cryopreservation banks. For the reasons described above, this essay addresses the generalities of germplasm banks, emphasizing their use and importance for food production and access. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
