Abstract

This article examines the Wiradjuri people's practice of carving sacred symbols into trees to mark burials, known as marara. It discusses a recent project that documented these carvings in the Central Tablelands and emphasizes the importance of preserving and protecting these cultural sites. The article also provides historical context on the colonization of Australia and its impact on Indigenous peoples, including the Wiradjuri. The project aims to document these carvings, which have been threatened by colonialism, vandalism, and time, and serves as a teaching tool for future generations to reaffirm the existence and vitality of Wiradjuri culture.
