Abstract
- This article, authored by Sarah Walsh and Marie-Aleth Richard, sheds light on the gender inequality that exists in academic dermatology. Despite making up a significant portion of the workforce, women are underrepresented in leadership positions, editorial boards, and conference programs. The authors attribute this inequality to societal and biological factors, as women often have to compromise on their career development to prioritize family. The article also discusses roadblocks to achieving gender parity and highlights areas of progress. It emphasizes the importance of accommodating career structures to support caregivers and calls for improved visibility of women in the field. The authors provide a roadmap for achieving gender equity in academic dermatology, including mentorship, flexible working hours, and legislation supporting parenting. The article concludes with a quote from Shirley Chisholm, encouraging women to bring a folding chair if they are not given a seat at the table. [Extracted from the article]
