Abstract

The article discusses the importance of including people experiencing socioeconomic deprivation (PESD) in qualitative research to address health disparities. PESD often face higher rates of long-term conditions and are underrepresented in research due to trust issues and other barriers. The article emphasizes the need for inclusive language, building trust, considering various aspects of deprivation, adopting an intersectional approach, and using creative dissemination methods. The authors share their experiences and stress the importance of commitment, innovation, empathy, and inclusivity in qualitative research for a more equitable healthcare landscape. The article titled "Barriers and facilitators of self-management of diabetes amongst people experiencing socioeconomic deprivation: A systematic review and qualitative synthesis" explores the challenges and opportunities for individuals with diabetes who are also experiencing socioeconomic deprivation. The authors conducted a systematic review and qualitative synthesis to identify the barriers and facilitators of self-management in this population. The study highlights the importance of addressing social determinants of health and providing tailored support to improve diabetes self-management in marginalized communities.
