Abstract

This article discusses the late work of anthropologist Ruy Duarte de Carvalho, which addresses the political convulsions in Angola and Portugal. The author highlights how Carvalho's historical and political perspective enriches anthropology, leading to a view of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal as a beginning rather than an end. The text also discusses the importance of Mwatyipula in Carvalho's work during the transition period in Angola, from a one-party socialist state to a fragile multi-party system marked by civil war. Additionally, the text summarizes the work of Angolan author Pepetela, which addresses colonialist dictatorship and the Carnation Revolution in Angola, and analyzes civil society activism in Angola since the 1990s.
