Abstract

Recently, there have been many studies on the inhibition of asphalt fumes; however, the study on the inhibition of component of asphalt fumes is still limited. In this paper, four kinds of fumes and odor suppressant were selected based on the principles of physical adsorption and chemical inhibition, and the particulate matter of asphalt fumes was taken as the object of fume suppression, and the benzene organic matter among volatile organic compounds was taken as the object of odor purification. The inhibition effects of fumes and odor suppressant on asphalt fumes particulate matter and volatile organic compounds were investigated based on the gravimetric method and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The effects of fumes and odor inhibitors on rheological properties were obtained by dynamic shear rheometry. Results showed that asphalt fumes particles and benzene organics in volatile organic compounds were used as fumes suppression and odor purification targets, respectively. Activated carbon was the most effective in suppressing fumes with 65.7 %. It was 1.2 times more effective than diatomaceous earth and Odor Cleaner A. Odor cleaner B had the highest suppression rate of 76.4 % on the benzene component of volatile organic compounds released from asphalt binder. Activated carbon also had a good suppression effect on the benzene component of volatile organic compounds released from asphalt binder, with suppression rate of 59 %. Fumes and odor suppressants had a low impact on asphalt pavement performance, especially suppressants based on chemical inhibition principles. • Experimental parameters affect the release of asphalt fumes. • Activated carbon inhibited asphalt fumes by 65.7 %. • The inhibition of benzene organic compounds by odor cleaner B was 76.4 %. • Verify the road performance of asphalt binder.
