Abstract

The article discusses the need for global quality improvement programs in the field of pediatric anesthesia. It highlights the efforts of Wake Up Safe (WUS), a US-based program, in improving patient safety in high-income countries (HICs) and large urban centers in middle-income countries (MICs). However, the article suggests that WUS should expand its focus to include low-income countries (LICs) and poor parts of MICs, as anesthesia-related mortality rates in these countries are significantly higher. The article emphasizes the importance of tailoring quality improvement programs to fit local problems, organizational frameworks, and resources. It also suggests specific targets for collaboration with LICs, such as strengthening academic anesthesiology and supporting pediatric anesthesia fellowship trained physicians in Sub-Saharan Africa. The article concludes by highlighting the potential impact of QI collaborations on improving patient safety in LICs and the need for a customized approach to address the unique challenges faced by these countries.
