Abstract

The upland communities described by Hüsken (1998) are contested areas where community members - farmers - are in constant competition with each other. Farmers fight to be the most successful, even at the expense of others. This situation portrays farmers as highly rational beings, far from the common notion of the roamantism of village life, full of solidarity and mutual help. This paper aims to examine the transformation of the rural economy, which in recent times has become based not only on agriculture but also on tourism. We start from the question of whether the transformation of rural livelihoods, with the expansion of the business sector in the village, is able to promote the inclusion and integration of more farmers and, at the same time, to reduce the spirit of competition. A brief look at the field findings shows that the expansion of the business sector in the village does not necessarily create opportunities for excluded farmers to participate in this new business - tourism. This research was conducted using participant observation and interviews in a highland village, Desa Rejo, that is undergoing a transformation from agriculture to tourism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
