Abstract

Currently, there is abundant literature on the treatment of autism in the media, but not on the perceptions that people with autism and their families have about how they are represented in the media. In the present study we disseminate the results of a research whose main objective is to contrast how autism is exposed in series, films, and documentaries and to assess what level of the representations they transmit to society through group interviews to a total of 20 people, including family members and people with autism, and their subsequent analysis and coding. The results show that the transmission of knowledge and non-formal information through the media is insufficient, sensationalist, stereotyped and, therefore, fosters myths and prejudices in the general society, perpetuating a biased and distorted social idea of autism.
