Abstract

A 61-year-old woman developed lithium toxicity while being treated for bipolar disorder. She experienced symptoms such as slurred speech, reduced responsiveness, difficulty swallowing, and limited water intake. After ruling out other causes, it was determined that the woman had motor neuron disease. Her lithium levels were high, indicating toxicity, so the medication was withdrawn. However, her manic symptoms returned, leading to multiple attempts to withdraw lithium, which resulted in relapses. Ultimately, the decision was made to maintain her on moderate doses of quetiapine and a low dose of lithium, with the addition of sodium valproate to her treatment plan. [Extracted from the article]
