Abstract

An international research group led by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) has identified nine reasons why freshwater biodiversity is indispensable for humans. Freshwater animal and plant species are particularly vulnerable, with one-third of freshwater animal species facing extinction. Freshwater biodiversity is of great importance for various ecosystem services such as food, health, recreation, and climate regulation. It is emphasized that the protection of freshwater biodiversity is urgently needed and that policy and authorities should integrate this more strongly into water management. The article emphasizes the importance of nature-based solutions for the protection of freshwater ecosystems. It is pointed out that such solutions are often more cost-effective and efficient than technical solutions. Examples of nature-based solutions include the use of floodplains for flood protection, the restoration of riparian vegetation to prolong the lifespan of dams, and the use of constructed wetlands for water treatment. The article also highlights the importance of freshwater biodiversity for food, water purification, climate regulation, and cultural value. It is emphasized that the protection of freshwater ecosystems is of great importance in order to maintain these services. [Extracted from the article]
