Abstract

The article discusses the potential impact of nutritional and environmental exposures on the epithelial barrier function in athletes. It highlights that exposure to toxic substances, such as pollutants and additives in food and cleaning products, can compromise the integrity of the skin, airways, and gut barriers. This can lead to microbial dysbiosis, inflammation, and an increased risk of infections and chronic inflammatory diseases in athletes. The authors suggest the need for strategies to mitigate these harmful exposures and repair the epithelial barrier function in order to improve the overall health and performance of athletes.
