This study traces the two approaches pioneered by Lefebvre (2003, 15-19, 73-78) and Rex and Moore (1967: 228-229, 270-273), who were influential in urban studies in the mid-twentieth century and differentiated by emphasizing the opportunities and limits of the city. After presenting a historical perspective and the development of urban theories, the study covers the process leading to urbanity, and includes theories about the right to the city and settlement-based class formations, which have formed a path in urban studies from the mid-twentieth century to the present day. The criticisms brought to urban studies are touched upon, around the views of Sayer (1993: 335-338), who went beyond the abstraction-based approaches.
