Abstract
- A response to William Bowman's article, "ACM Profits Considered Harmful," is provided. The authors present evidence to counter Bowman’s claim that the ACM's financial reserves are excessive for a nonprofit organization. They argue that these reserves are essential for supporting the ACM’s mission and commitments, including the significant investment needed to transition to a fully open digital library by 2026. Despite ongoing challenges like revenue shortfalls and operational costs, the reserves are crucial for the ACM to manage risks, sustain its mission, and support key initiatives, consistent with practices observed in similar professional societies.
