Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects today 0.6 to 0.7% of the world’s population, which makes it one of the most frequent neurodevelopmental disorders in daily practice. Long presented in a pejorative or even deficient mode, the social representation of ASD has evolved considerably over the past 20 years, in particular to the benefit of the concept of neurodiversity and the work of associations supporting these people. In this movement, adults with ASD increasingly allow themselves to choose to become parents (or not) and therefore to engage (or not) in a maternity project. We present here the particularities of the parental experience of women and couples affected by ASD in order to enlighten the care teams and enable them to guide these couples, as well as possible, in their first interactions with their baby. We also aim to avoid any risk of stigmatization or misinterpretation of the quality of mother-baby exchanges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
