Abstract

This document is a reply to a comment on a study that examined the association between early electrolyte monitoring and hospitalizations with hyponatremia (low sodium levels) in older adults starting antidepressants. The authors disagree with the comment that information on symptoms would have clarified the role of hyponatremia in hospitalization, as symptoms are nonspecific. They also disagree that censoring a small percentage of the sample during the follow-up period introduced selection bias. The authors suggest that longer hospital stays in some patients may be due to chronic conditions associated with hyponatremia and deconditioning in the hospital. [Extracted from the article]
