Abstract

Aguirre, Carlos. Psychological Approach (reincarnation and karma). The West, rationalist, has done its utmost to conquer exterior space. For the East, intuitive, the conquest has been of the interior. Jung discovers the collective unconscious, with its archetypes, psychological equivalents of the samskaras or footprints of past lives. There are seven basic archetypes, one of which is Self which integrates all of the rest. Within the archetypes there is a karmic factor which includes the residue of ancestral life. Stevenson and others have tried to prove reincarnation, through rational means, although Stevenson rejects hypnotic regression since the subject reflects the mental world, conscious and unconscious, of the hypnotist. People object to Stevenson because most of his investigations have been done in cultures which openly believe in reincarnation. Other investigators think that hypnotic regression not only reactivates the memories of past lives, but that it has a therapeutic function. There's a bridge which can be built between the oriental and occidental psychologies: it invites us to think about karma not in the sense of misfortune, but in a sense of finality or mandate, and not as a law of moral retribution. Karma is the meaning that I am going to give to my life. With my scientific rational thought I hope that interest in this phenomenon doesn't decline. I am uneasy studying eastern thought and practicing some of its meditative techniques, because my spiritual evolution in the Christian faith is not based on this concept. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
