Abstract

This study compares the southern American cone geographic map drawn up by Custodio Sá de Faria to the existing maps of the interior and coastal profile of Patagonia, mainly in the final decades of the eighteenth century. This copy was sent to the Marquis of Loreto in 1786 and can be consulted in the General Archive of the Indies along with other copies and navigation diaries. The analysis of its content goes from north to south: the forts on the border on the Salado River, south of Buenos Aires, the fortified places of the Pampas, the cartographic heritage in the Chilean Cuyo region and contributions from famous missionaries who were in those territories, and their news about the activity in those years. Of special interest are the contributions on the Spanish coastal navigations carried out in the project to found forts and towns in the Bahía sin Fondo, Bahía San Julián and Río Negro. The project was commissioned by the minister Don José de Gálvez, and carried out by viceroy José de Vértiz between 1779-83. Diaries and maps of members of the Royal Navy are preserved, thus allowing us to update some erroneous data in force until then.
