Abstract
- This article, titled "Mapping Mississippi's Violent Past," explores the author's journey to Seville, Spain, to view a 480-year-old map of Mississippi. The author, a journalist and native of Mississippi, seeks to understand the forces that shaped his state's dark history, particularly the area where Emmett Till was murdered. The map, drawn by Spanish cartographer Alonso de Santa Cruz in 1544, reveals the early exploration and colonization of the region, foreshadowing the violence and exploitation that would occur. The author reflects on the significance of the map and its connection to the history of Mississippi. [Extracted from the article]
