Abstract

Having a mentally disabled child places a significant economic burden on them. Suppose mentally disabled individuals and their parents do not have sufficient income and financial means to continue their lives. In that case, they can rely on socially charitable treatments and somehow be the recipient of philanthropic treatments. In this research, which aims to evaluate whether society approaches disabled individuals and their families as aid objects or rights-based in terms of philanthropy, and to reveal whether the parents' approach on this issue is different from the society, the relationship between disabled individuals and their parents and their philanthropic approaches is discussed. Using the qualitative research method in the study, in-depth face-to-face interviews were conducted with a semi-structured interview form with 39 mothers and 1 father who had a mentally disabled child and were receiving Special Rehabilitation training in the Kemalpaşa district of Izmir. As a result of the research, it was determined that parents of disabled children accepted and welcomed the help provided by individuals, institutions, and non-governmental organizations and felt grateful to the people who provided the help. As a result, this situation caused them to objectify themselves and be stigmatized by the society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
