Abstract
- A population-based cohort study published in the European Journal of Haematology found that individuals diagnosed with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) have an increased risk of developing dementia compared to the general population. The risk varied depending on the specific subtype of MPN, with patients with essential thrombocythemia (ET), polycythemia vera (PV), and chronic myelofibrosis (MF) having higher dementia risks. The study suggests that chronic inflammation and reduced cerebral blood flow may contribute to dementia development in MPN patients. However, further research is needed to understand the association and consider factors such as gender, lifestyle, and treatment effects. Screening for MPNs in dementia patients may be beneficial in identifying undiagnosed cases and initiating treatment. [Extracted from the article]
