Abstract
- This article examines the concept of prosthetic memory and textual inheritance by analyzing Nicole Krauss's novel, "The History of Love," with the insights of philosopher Bernard Stiegler. Stiegler argues that texts act as posthuman mechanisms that transmit knowledge and memory. He emphasizes the interdependent relationship between technology and culture, highlighting the significance of technological artifacts in preserving societal practices and enabling new ways of incorporating technical objects into our connection with the past. Krauss's novel exemplifies this idea by showing how texts and images serve as prosthetic aids for memory, allowing for the preservation and transmission of the past. The article also discusses the role of technology in preserving and reconstructing historical memory, enabling the present generation to engage with and comprehend narratives from unfamiliar pasts. It uses the example of a young girl named Alma Singer to illustrate this concept, as she seeks to understand her father's language and her literary namesake. The article suggests that our interactions with technology shape the future of memory. [Extracted from the article]
