Abstract

The ancient Egyptians revered crocodiles as avatars of the god Sobek and believed that a healthy crocodile population was a sign of a successful Nile flood. They mummified crocodiles as votive offerings to curry favor with Sobek, and thousands of mummified crocodiles have been found throughout Egypt. The methods of sourcing crocodiles for mummification have been a mystery, but recent archaeological evidence suggests that crocodiles were hunted using hooks baited with fish. The crocodile's internal organs were not removed during mummification, and a resinous substance was used instead of natron to preserve the body. [Extracted from the article]
