Abstract

The article discusses the long-term outcomes of nutrition trials in critical care patients. Survivors of critical illness often experience physical, cognitive, and mental disorders after leaving the hospital, leading to a lower quality of life. Various interventions, including nutrition therapy, have been studied to mitigate these adverse outcomes. The article focuses on the results of the EPaNIC trial, which examined the effects of early parenteral nutrition on mortality and functional outcomes. The study found no significant differences between the early and late parenteral nutrition groups in terms of mortality or physical functioning. The article emphasizes the importance of patient-centered outcomes and suggests that future research should focus on other aspects of nutrition therapy and long-term functional domains.
