Abstract

This article discusses the progress being made in perinatal mental health research. It emphasizes the importance of addressing perinatal psychiatric and substance use disorders, as they can have negative effects on maternal functioning, obstetrical and neonatal outcomes, and child socioemotional regulation. The special issue highlights the interdisciplinary nature of perinatal psychiatry, which involves various specialties such as obstetrics, neonatology, pediatrics, psychiatry, psychology, epidemiology, and neuroscience. The studies in the issue cover topics such as the risks associated with perinatal psychiatric disorders, the effects of treatments, the role of Mother-Baby units, and the biological aspects of perinatal depression. The research aims to improve treatment strategies, identify risk factors and biomarkers, and understand the underlying pathophysiology of perinatal mental health disorders.
