Abstract

This article provides information about the Earthwatch Institute. The organization was founded in the U.S. in 1971 to support scientists who wanted to carry out field research but lacked the necessary resources. It funds research projects by recruiting volunteers who pay a share of the project's costs, in addition to donating their time. Earthwatch addresses important environmental issues that require long-term study to find practical conservation solutions. Projects are divided into six primary research areas, these are endangered habitats, threatened species, climate change, human-wildlife conflict, sustainable resource management and Earth science and cultural evolution.
