Abstract

Ratzel's ideas are reviewed, recognizing him as a sort of putative father of the concept of territory in contemporary geography. From this milestone, we analyze the contributions of three French-speaking geographers: Jean Gottman, Yves Lacoste, and Claude Raffestin, who laid the foundations of a renewal of the prevailing Vidalian geography among the Gallic intellectual circles, originating what we could call post-Vidalism. The analysis concludes that it is impossible to accept the separation of contemporary and current geographical thought between the Anglo-Saxon and Francophone schools, since the variations and twists in the understanding of concepts, as territory, that occur in each of these schools are more remarkable than between them.
