Abstract

This article aims to present relevant components of the Behavioral Diagnostic System VDS-J for Adolescents (VDS-J, Verhaltensdiagnostiksystem für Jugendliche, Sulz & Richter-Benedikt, 2001; Richter-Benedikt, 2015a). These specific questionnaires for adolescents aged 13 and over were developed in a pilot study by adapting existing questionnaires for adults (Sulz, 1992, 1997, 2017a–d). Its purpose is to capture subtle aspects of psychological experience during adolescence and to differentiate between treating symptoms and promoting personality development. Ultimately, they are designed to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the functionality of symptoms during adolescence and provide important clues for setting therapeutic goals. The Behavioral Diagnostic System for Adolescents (VDS-J) is to be viewed as a diagnostic instrument of Strategic Adolescent Therapy (SJT® ), whose therapeutic implications are based on the affective-cognitive development theory. This theory suggests that biographical experiences with parents have a significant influence on personality development. In this context, the VDS-J questionnaires are of crucial importance in order to record psychodynamic and learning history aspects of the individual’s development during adolescence. The following sections explain the theoretical background, the application of the questionnaires and the resulting therapeutic implications. A case example serves to illustrate this.
