Abstract
- The emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) made evident the importance of information technologies in education and their usefulness giving them value through implementing disruptive ICTs. These include virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), which together make up what we call the metaverse. This research aims to address and analyze the metaverse as an educational tool and its potential impacts on the student's educational process. The research design was documentary in nature, using the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases, which are considered the main databases worldwide. These databases bring together publications of scientific impact and relevance, particularly on educational technology aspects directly related to the approach sought in this article. This research focuses on showing researchers and the educational community the current situation on a topic that marks the future of virtual learning environments in both the medium and long term. We are dealing with a research topic that is in a preliminary exploratory state. Therefore, significant changes in the research trends proposed in this study may occur during the coming years. However, it is essential to review the main scientific contributions of the topic of study to ensure an optimal establishment of its theoretical bases and subsequent adoption as a critical topic for the scientific community.
