Abstract

The article explores the relationship between child maltreatment and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) responsiveness in youth with asthma. The study, conducted on African American and Puerto Rican youth aged 8-20 years, found that children with a history of maltreatment were more likely to experience improved asthma-related quality of life after ICS treatment compared to those without such history. Despite limitations in statistical power and generalizability, the findings highlight the importance of ICS treatment for children with asthma and maltreatment history. The study suggests that ICS may be more beneficial for youth with maltreatment history due to prior suboptimal asthma management or enhanced perception of improvement in quality of life.
