Abstract

In this article, we highlight an underdiscussed element of field work: reciprocal community requests—requests from community to engage beyond conducting ethical research and to support a community's own work. We draw from our own fieldwork in New Orleans, LA, Camden, NJ, and Philadelphia, PA, to make these requests visible and discuss their importance. We find that these reciprocal requests extend far beyond consideration of rigorous research or an ethics of consent. We discuss our framework of how to answer these requests, drawing from abolition principles of (1) Participatory Partnership, (2) Finding Shared Values, (3) Sharing Risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
