Abstract

The book review "Ethics in Crisis? A Paradigm Revolution for Ethical Research in the Social Sciences" by Will C. van den Hoonaard discusses the challenges faced by researchers in navigating research ethics boards (REBs) during qualitative social research. The author argues that the current ethics framework, developed under a biomedical model, is ill-suited for the complexities of qualitative research. Van den Hoonaard proposes the development of a new research ethics covenant that better aligns with the priorities and concerns of research in dynamic, community contexts, emphasizing the need for a paradigm shift in ethical research practices. The review also highlights the importance of incorporating indigenous research paradigms and community perspectives in formulating culturally sensitive ethical guidelines for social science research.
