Abstract

The article discusses the concept of recognition in political and social thought, focusing on the ambivalence of recognition and its implications for ideological recognition. The author critiques Axel Honneth's theory of ideological recognition, proposing an alternative epistemic structural account that considers epistemic trust and structural power. The epistemic structural account aims to identify unjustified recognition by examining the violation of the basic norm of trust and the operations of structural power. The article also explores the theoretical and practical implications of the epistemic structural account for critical theory, social pathology, power dynamics, and the recognition of racial identities.
