Abstract

This article reports that Lockheed Martin Corp.'s plan to switch airframes for the U.S. Army's Aerial Common Sensor (ACS) program will increase the price of development by roughly $400 million, nearly 50%, prompting questions about the ACS' future. The swelling cost is prompting officials in the Pentagon to explore the impact of terminating the project and either recompeting the work or redistributing the requirements to other existing and planned platforms. Meanwhile, industry sources expect a delay of 1-2 years in the program's schedule, pushing the first deliveries of five aircraft to the Army as late as Fiscal 2012.
