Abstract

The main purpose of this research was to study the time spent by adults connected to the Internet, which device they use the most, to study whether gender influences problematic Internet use, and to examine the relationship between problematic Internet use and anxiety and depression symptomatology. A descriptive-correlational crosssectional non-experimental design was used. The sample consisted of 237 adults, 80.6% of whom reported being female. The main findings indicate that 35.86% of the participants spend between 5 to 6 hours a day connected to the Internet. It was also observed that there were no significant differences in problematic Internet use by gender. Significant positive relationships were observed between problematic Internet use and anxiety and depression symptomatology. It was also observed that problematic Internet use does not moderate the relationship between anxiety and depression but does partially mediate this relationship. These findings demonstrate the relationship between problematic Internet use and symptomatology associated with anxiety and depression, which is consistent with other research.
