Abstract

The Observatorio Americano, a newspaper edited by Manuel de Castro in 1816 in Buenos Aires, is an example of Rioplatense enlightened thought focused on overcoming the evils of the Revolution of 1810. The publication is known for its participation in the debate over Manuel Belgrano's Inca Plan of that year; however, the paper's editor had personal doubts about it, which he transmitted through the newspaper, using it as a teaching tool. He laid out his concerns, combining them with what he saw as the general interests of a literatre society in order to propose a future order in which the regenerative force of the Enlightenment would help to avoid the dangers of a freedom which --as with all new things-- could negatively affect that future in construction.
