Abstract

The success of a house design in performing sustainability could be explored and investigated through various approaches. However, the efficiency of floor plan design and its relation to building sustainability is still rarely discussed and explored. Drawing from such a notion, this paper offers a discussion on floor plan efficiency with a particular focus on two program-related aspects of building design: room size and proportion. Situating the study upon dwelling floor plans as its context, the study offers a two-stage investigation characterized by the utilization of GAN as a machine learning framework. The machine-learning-employed investigation shows a promising result, whereas automation of solutions regarding the floor plan efficiency could be achieved in a shorter time. Overall, the result of this study indicates the potential of exploring floor plan efficiency for disclosing and expanding our understanding of more holistic building sustainability.
