Abstract

The article explores the relationship between Harold Laski's pluralism and Carl Schmitt's intellectual development, focusing on how Laski's ideas influenced Schmitt's thinking. Laski's pluralism emphasizes individual conscience as the ultimate moral authority, challenging the state's sovereignty to obtain consent from individuals. Schmitt, in response, critiques Laski's pluralism, arguing for the necessity of a single overarching association to maintain political unity and order. Schmitt's rejection of individual conscience as a source of moral authority may have influenced his later support for Nazism, highlighting the significance of the concept of conscience in political philosophy.
