Abstract
- With the construction of the Castro Waterfall (Fonfría, Zamora) on the first international stretch of the Douro between 1949 and 1952, the company Saltos del Duero multiplied its electricity supply to the growing Spanish hydroelectric system. At the same time, the architects Galíndez Zabala and Chapa Galíndez designed a new town for the employees, consisting of housing, community facilities and offices. The equipment was fully adjusted to the orography, the aesthetics, and the popular way of building, and its architecture reached notable levels of quality, comfort, and modernity. In use since then, in 1989 the premises were abandoned and destruction took hold of the planned town, so that it is now in a state of advanced ruin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
