Abstract

This article examines how opinion columns make their value judgments about inclusive language. To do so, we draw on Martin and White's (2005) theory of appraisal, specifically the subcategory of appreciation (attitude), and evaluate the judgments that opinion columns make about inclusive language. This research is based on two types of quantitative and qualitative analysis: on the one hand, the Keywords function of Sketch Engine identifies the most frequently used evaluative adjectives and nouns in opinion columns; on the other hand, it observes which resources from this subdomain are common in these journalistic texts. The results have shown that evaluations with negative polarity continue to prevail, and with a notable abundance of derogatory terms and false gendered forms used to reinforce opposition to such language.
