In a corpus of narrative dialogues, we show that the use of "on" is not intended to define a clear and precise reference, but rather to share a point of view and introduce entities onto the verbal scene: "on" is used to make narrated entities and events salient while erasing the narrative source, thus creating a fuzzy, dynamic and evolving reference. This observation puts the usual categorization of "on" as "indefinite" into perspective, and instead highlights its essential role in structuring the narrative in a context of direct dialogues Our results thus reveal the contribution of "on" to the coherence and cohesion of discourse.
