Abstract

This article reports that Sun Microsystems Inc. is unveiling a new line of 64-bit servers said to offer a significant performance boost, with support for Unix, Linux, and Windows. The new line targets the financial services industry, the bedrock of the company's server sales. The Sun Fire x64 servers, which carried the widely known Galaxy code name, are about one quarter the size of the UltraSparc-based systems they are replacing. The new Galaxy servers can be rack-mounted, and they are half the price and use about one-third the power of the previous high-end models.
