Abstract
- This article features the Sovereign Information Integration (SII) technology of IBM Corp.'s Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California. The technology attempts to solve the dilemma of security versus privacy issue in encrypting data. SII enables companies to gain value from their data while complying with privacy policies and legislation. Each party is to encrypt its own data and then send it to the other party to encrypt again. If the encryption methods are commutative, meaning that one gets the same result whichever encryption is applied first, then a name or identification number appearing in both files would have the same double-encrypted value and be recognized as a match.
